(This post is an itinerary post to help those looking for advice on how to spend their time in certain locations. For more detailed information about the destinations, look for postings about the individual places listed below. See the Trips page for more information).
In the spring of 2025, a group of eight of us embarked upon a somewhat ambitions trek across Eastern and Central Europe, mostly following the Danube River. Our initial provocation was getting my mom to Prague, and then adding in a river cruise around that. Another goal was getting to Budapest, the birthplace of my mom's grandmother, and her point of departure before immigrating to the US. Therefore, we were looking at a river cruise along the Danube. Whether we should do the upper Danube or lower was something that took a little exploration - my mom claimed she had been to Vienna before I was born, and therefore, didn't need to return to the imperial city (this was later debunked).
Therefore, it was settled that we'd sail the lower portion of the Danube, visiting a number of countries no one in our group had previously visited. We gathered up some family members, my cousin, Ben's parents, his aunt and her partner, and off we went!
Below you'll find all that we saw and did, everywhere that we ate, tours we took and any information you might find helpful to plan your own Eastern and Central European adventure. Off we go!
Eastern and Central Europe Itinerary - Spring 2025
Day 1
April 1, 2025
Fly to Los Angeles (LAX)
Flight: Alaska Airlines Seattle to Los Angeles
Depart Seattle (SEA) - 7:59pm
Arrive Los Angeles (LAX) - 10:49pm
Our trip to Europe started with a flight to Los Angeles the night before our real departure. The reason for this was to save money when flying business class. It was so much cheaper for us to not only buy a one way flight from Seattle to Los Angeles for each of us as well as baggage fees, as well as pay for a hotel than it was to just buy a round trip business class flight from Seattle. And we still saved over $1000 doing this! If you have some flexibility with your travel planning, it might be worth looking up other major departure cities to see what better deals may be available.
Day 2
April 2, 2025
Fly from LAX to Bucharest via London Heathrow
Lounge Access: American Airlines Flagship Lounge
Flight: American Airlines Los Angeles to London Heathrow
Depart: Los Angeles (LAX) 1:20pm (scheduled), 2:45pm (actual)
Arrive: London Heathrow (LHR) 8:00am (scheduled), 8:45am (actual) next day
Due to an initial mechanical issue, followed by a business class seat that had a broken arm rest, our flight departure was pushed back, causing us to miss our later connection to Bucharest. Our plan to fly to LAX the night before to get business class would prove to be a game changer for us the following morning in London.
Lounge Access in London: British Airways Club Lounge for Business Class in Terminal 5
Flight: London Heathrow to Bucharest (April 3rd)
Depart: London Heathrow (LHR) 10:25am (scheduled), 3:05pm (actual)
Arrive: Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) 3:25pm (scheduled), 8:30pm (actual)
Well, we missed our connection. It wasn't without some effort on our part to try to make the original flight. I opted to buy wifi for the last 2 hours of my flight to reach out to my mother and cousin who had landed in London a few hours before we were scheduled to arrive. I asked if they could find an assistance desk, to see if we could get some help getting from our gate to our departure gate, knowing we would need as much assistance as we could get. Having previously connected through London on a different trip, we knew we had to go through security. What we didn't know at the time was that the airport will cut you off a half hour before your flight if you are not already through security. Therefore, Ben and I would not be able to make our connection, but fortunately, the rest of our party, who had all flown from different corners of the US, would all meet up in London on the plane flying to Bucharest.
As I mentioned earlier, we were fortunate to have flown business class, as this gave us access to the British Airways lounge in Terminal 5. This lounge is a quiet respite from the absolute chaos that is the A concourse of Terminal 5. I was able to take a shower, we could have access to lots of delicious food offerings, as well as a quiet place to rest, if not sleep.
The other thing that my mom and cousin discovered in their adventure around Terminal 5 trying to get us on their flight was that because our flight was delayed and we would not arrive at our destination for over X amount of hours later than originally planned, we were offered a decent amount of compensation. My tip for you is that if you find yourself significantly delayed, look into this perk, as it was a good amount of money!
Day 3
April 3, 2025
Arrive Bucharest
Airport transfers: Booked through our hotel's concierge. Two Mercedes Sprinter vans for 900 RON (~$200 US).
Once arriving in Bucharest many hours later than we had originally intended, we did have a little wait at the border crossing. Fortunately, the rest of our party was able to make it to their respective hotels earlier. While I had my wifi on the flight from Los Angeles to Heathrow, I emailed our hotel to change the transfer information.

Absolutely incredible hotel, converted from an elegant bank to stunning luxury property. Worth the trip to Bucharest alone? Maybe!
Upon arrival, you are greeted with a chilled glass of Champagne, definitely a nice way to start a stay. After many, many hours of not sleeping, we were ready to close our eyes in our fabulous room.
Room category: Heritage

Day 4

We started off our first full day in Bucharest by doing a short walk around the old town of the city, where we were all situated. We followed the plan provided by the GPSmyCity website. Afterwards, we took a tour of former dictator Nicolae Ceausescu's home, followed by dinner and a performance at the absolutely stunning Romanian Athenaeum. A few of us ended the night by meeting up for drinks with some other family members who joined us from London. It was a long first day, but pretty productive for being jet lagged!

Also note that it's VERY IMPORTANT that your Uber driver takes you to the correct entrance for the tour, or else you will miss it completely (as some members of our party found out).

Check out of the Marmorosch Hotel
Car transfer: We hired two vans via the hotel concierge to take us to Giurgiu, Romania straight to the AmaWaterways dock. Cost for two vans was 400 Euros.

Note that this restaurant does book up very quickly and is quite popular. Be sure to mark your calendar for the days that reservations open in advance so that you can be sure you get a reservation for your trip. You won't regret it!
After dinner drinks at Liz & Chain Rooftop Bar

If you're looking for a place that has the best view of the city skyline all lit up in the evening, this is the place to grab a drink and soak in the city's incredible scenery.
Day 15
April 15, 2025
Guided Tour of Budapest
Hungarian Parliament Tour
This was a very long day. It was not set up initially to be so long, but due to factors beyond our control, two big items were merged onto this single day. If possible, I would not recommend doing the guided tour in the morning, followed by a Parliament tour if you could avoid it.
However, if, like us, that was the only way to squeeze the Parliament building in, then it was definitely worth seeing. If you could space them out better, you can thank me later.
Guided tour with Sweet Travels Private Tours
This company was suggested by our hotel. They also arranged transportation to the airport the next morning. The guide and driver picked us up at our hotel and shuttled us around the city. Both the guide and driver were very nice, and the guide was incredibly knowledgeable about the city. They were flexible with helping us design a tour that met our group's wants/needs for main sights in Budapest.
Jewish Quarter and Dohány Street Synagogue

Ticket price: 43€ (Hungary uses the local Hungarian forint - marked as ft - as their currency. The Euro price is given because this is how we were quoted prices at the time).
Note that because we had a guide who had a special pass, we were able to cut the very long entry line.

Buda's Castle Hill

Matthias Church

Tickets to enter the church: 10(€)
Absolutely worth buying the ticket as the interiors are stunning
Fisherman's Bastion (tour ends, and we return to our hotel)

Tickets to enter Fisherman's Bastion's Upper Terrace: 5€

This picture above is the Parliament building seen from the Fisherman's Bastion on the Buda side of the city.

Day 16
April 16, 2025
Fly to Prague, Czech Republic
Flight: Lufthansa from Budapest to Frankfurt
Depart: Budapest (BUD) 6:10am
Arrive: Frankfurt (FRA) 8:00am
Flight: Lufthansa from Frankfurt to Prague
Depart: Frankfurt (FRA) 9:50am, actual ~10:50am
Arrive: Prague (PRG) 10:50am, actual 11:50am
Today was the day we would leave the Danube behind and fly to our final city, Prague. When designing this itinerary, Prague had really been the main goal for my mom, and I knew by making it the last city of the trip, everyone would be happy - who doesn't love Prague?
For this itinerary, we intended on leaving the best for last (though I think you could make a strong case for Budapest these days). Getting to Prague from Budapest, though, is not as easy or clear cut as you might hope, especially if you're like me and avoid certain budget airlines. While the train could be an option, it takes about 7 hours. That's a long time to keep track of our (massive amounts of) luggage. We looked into hiring a van and driver, but again, it would take a long time.
Our best option, it seemed, was to fly using Lufthansa, which unfortunately, included a stop in Frankfurt (nothing against the city, it just extended the trip). And because our first leg was super early in the morning (our flight departed at 7am), it meant we would arrive in Prague exhausted, but with a bunch of time to explore the city if we could muster the energy (spoiler alert - I could not).
To those looking to copy a similar itinerary, just note that this day may likely be a wash any way you shake it, unless your comfort level includes flying budget airlines that may offer a direct flight at more reasonable hours.
Upon arriving in Prague, we arranged transportation with our hotel.
2 V-Class Mercedes sprinter vans: 2940CKZ each (~$145)
Hotel: W Prague

Room type: Wow Bohemia Duplex

Dinner: Ben explored the Easter Market right across the street from the hotel and I skipped dinner for a well deserved nap.

Today was an ambitious day of seeing the real highlights of Prague! My mother-in-law had used a tour guide, Nina, during a previous trip to the city and she was able to arrange her to show us around. We would all highly recommend her!

Day 20
April 20, 2025
The End!
Fly from Prague to London Heathrow
Fly from London Heathrow to Seattle (Sea-Tac)
Flight: British Airlines Prague to London Heathrow
Depart: Prague (PRG) 6:55am
Arrive: London Heathrow (LHR) 7:40am
Flight: British Airlines London Heathrow to Seattle
Depart: London Heathrow (LHR) 9:45am
Arrive: Seattle (SEA) 1:20pm
After a very long time, it was time for our trip to end and to say our final farewells. While a few of our group would be traveling to London early in the morning to catch their connections back to the US, a couple departed later in the day.
From Seattle, to Los Angeles, New York City and Providence, Rhode Island, our little big group of 8 somehow survived 20 days of each other's company and managed to live to tell the tale!
Should you wish to take a group trip to Eastern and Central Europe, maybe adding in a river cruise for good measure, I hope this itinerary will help inspire you to make the most of your time in this very beautiful part of the world.
